Age Limit for Rhinoplasty

There is a certainly a minimum age for rhinoplasty. Dr. Yagoda recommends that teens desiring cosmetic and functional nasal surgery wait until they have gone through puberty.  For female patients, this means waiting until they’re at least 14 or 15 years old and for males, waiting until they’re at least 16. In addition to concerns about maturity and judgment (this is an awfully young age to be making decisions about permanent changes to your appearance), the nose may not reach its full adult size and shape until after puberty (Read more about teen rhinoplasty) But is there an upper age limit for this procedure?

The answer, assuming you’re in good health, is no. Like all surgery, rhinoplasty entails certain risks and you will need preoperative testing to make sure that you’re a viable candidate. However, Dr. Yagoda warns that rhinoplasty in those aged thirty and beyond, may cause much more of a perceived change in image and self-identity than it does in teens.  Apparently, after thirty years of looking at yourself in the mirror, the image is finally ingrained!

Dr. Yagoda routinely sees older patients who seek modifications to the shape and size of their nose. In fact, since the aging process can cause the nasal tip to droop, tip refinement surgery is often combined with other rejuvenating procedures such as a facelift, neck lift or blepharoplasty (eyelid lift).

To determine if you might benefit from rhinoplasty, call Dr. Yagoda today to schedule your personal comprehensive consultation.

Singers, Take Note!

Many singers are reluctant to have a surgical rhinoplasty because they believe it will change the quality of their singing voices. Barbra Streisand famously refused to have her nose done. But singers should know that a rhinoplasty only changes the clarity of sounds that are produced purely through the nose—so, the m, n, and ng sounds. Typically with a rhinoplasty, the exertion that produces nasal sounds will be lessened, and thus these sounds will simply become clearer. Barbra didn’t want to lose her signature nasal twang, but for most people, a renewed clarity in the voice is a good thing!
