Complications of Rhinoplasty

There are many reasons why a rhinoplasty might result in less than optimal results, but chief among these is the experience of your surgeon. Rhinoplasty isn’t just a cosmetic procedure, although it certainly has a profound impact on your appearance. It’s not enough for a nose to look good—it has to function beautifully too.

Because the nose is a complex structure of bones, cartilage and tissue, the potential for an undesirable outcome is understandably high. In fact, rhinoplasty has one of the highest rates of revisions of any plastic surgery. Estimates vary, but somewhere between 5% and 25% of all rhinoplasty patients will seek a revision or secondary rhinoplasty. While no surgeon can guarantee perfect results for all patients, you can certainly stack the odds in your favor by choosing a qualified surgeon such as Dr. Michelle Yagoda, who is both an otolaryngologist (a specialist of the ear, nose and throat) and facial plastic surgeon.

Complications of rhinoplasty may include the following:  1) An unforeseen complication of the surgery itself or the post-operative healing process; 2) Poor cosmetic outcome; 3) a negative impact on self-image because of unrealistic expectations or undetected body dysmophic disorder; or 4) decreased nasal function.

Potential Risks of the Surgery Itself

Like all surgeries, rhinoplasty carries certain risks including a reaction to the anesthesia, bleeding, and infection. The post-operative healing period can be vulnerable, so the patient must comply with the surgeon’s post-operative care instructions. Dr. Yagoda will review all of the potential risks during your personal consultation.

Potential Cosmetic and Functional Complications

Some of the most common complaints are an asymmetric, poorly defined or drooping tip; saddle nose deformity (the middle portion of the nose seems to sag as a result of overzealous reduction of nasal bone), a nose that’s too short or too long, visible grafts or implants, and breathing difficulties from development of scar tissue or damage to nasal structures.

If you’re contemplating rhinoplasty, see Dr. Yagoda first for authoritative, experienced care. And if you’re unhappy with a previous rhinoplasty result, see Dr. Yagoda to get the aesthetic and functional nose you deserve.

Singers, Take Note!

Many singers are reluctant to have a surgical rhinoplasty because they believe it will change the quality of their singing voices. Barbra Streisand famously refused to have her nose done. But singers should know that a rhinoplasty only changes the clarity of sounds that are produced purely through the nose—so, the m, n, and ng sounds. Typically with a rhinoplasty, the exertion that produces nasal sounds will be lessened, and thus these sounds will simply become clearer. Barbra didn’t want to lose her signature nasal twang, but for most people, a renewed clarity in the voice is a good thing!
