Contrary to popular belief, post-nasal drip is rarely the result of an increase in the quantity of mucous, but more commonly a result of a change in the quality of the mucous. Mucous is normally thin and watery, and it runs down the back of your throat indiscernibly, all day long. However, when mucous made in the nose and sinuses (about 1 liter per day!) can't drain freely, the mucous gets thick and sticky, and you become aware of it with every swallow. Although normal mucous allows the vocal cords to glide past each other smoothly, altered mucous from post-nasal drip does not. Coughing, throat-clearing, and even reflux may be the result of chronic post-nasal drip and each can contribute to raspiness, hoarseness, polyps, nodules, and an inability to reach all notes in the register.
