Can an eyelid lift help me?

Ask Dr. YagodaASK DOCTOR YAGODA

Question: I’m a 60-something year old woman and the skin around my eyes is just not what it used to be. The skin sags and I can’t wear eye shadow anymore because it barely shows. Can an eyelid lift help me or do I need a facelift?

Answer: The condition you are describing is known as hooding. Hooding occurs when upper eyelid skin becomes loose and hangs over the eyelid crease close to or onto the eyelashes.  Bothersome as it may be, the solution is fast, easy and virtually painless.  This excess skin, caused by the normal aging process or genetics in some cases, can be removed in the office under local anesthesia.  The incision, which is hidden in the normal upper eyelid crease, is nearly invisible when it heals.  And, here’s good news for the squeamish:  aside from the sensation of heaviness after surgery, there is no pain. This is because once the skin incision is made, the area can be numb for up to three weeks.  In addition, there is no need to worry about “seeing” something during the surgery. An opaque contact lens is placed into the eye, after it has been anesthetized with a topical eye drop.  As a result, you won’t feel the insertion or removal.

Question: My eyes always look tired and I have eye bags. I’m a 42-year-old man from Manhattan and I scar easily. Am I a candidate for an eyelid lift?

Answer: Yes, lower lid bags can easily be removed without leaving any visible scar.  This is through a transconjunctival approach.  In this surgery, an incision is made inside the lower eyelid and the fat is removed from the inside. This technique not only removes the unwanted fat bags, but it also preserves the strength and elasticity of the lower eyelid skin.

Question: Can a blepharoplasty change my eye shape? I’m Asian American, 33, living in New York City, and one of my eyes is rounder than the other, which makes me look asymmetrical.

Answer: Blepharoplasty can change the shape of the eye, if that is the goal, but routine eyelift surgery does not change its shape.  In some cases, Asian eyes can look rounder, or more Western, with incisionless double lid surgery as well.

Question: How drastically will a rhinoplasty procedure change my look? I’m a 38-year-old man and I just got promoted to Vice President. I don’t want people to notice but I’d like to finally make a change.

Question: I’m a 35-year-old Black female with a history of bad scars. Will I still be a candidate for rhinoplasty or nose job surgery?

Answer: Yes. The good news is that the face usually heals better than any other location! In addition, many cosmetic rhinoplasty procedures can be performed by a plastic surgeon with no external scar at all.  Lastly, many new techniques can be used to reduce the likelihood of scar formation after surgery.  Bottom line?  You should be fine!

Can my nose look like this picture?

Question: Can a rhinoplasty or nose job surgery make my nose look like the model’s nose in this magazine ad?

Answer: That depends on how many similarities you have with the model you have selected.  Each feature on your face indirectly impacts the other structures.  For example, if you desire a cosmetic procedure that will reduce a large bump on the nose, that may transform eyes that looked close together and make them appear more normally spaced.  In fact, the eyes haven’t changed position at all.  If you have similar facial structures, and your skin is similar, results may be imitated by a skilled plastic surgeon.  It is not possible to look exactly the same, but there may be a resemblance.

Why do some people have dimples and others don’t?

This article explains why some of us are born with dimples while others are left wishing they had them. It makes one factual error though- in the first paragraph it says “Obviously you can’t make yourself have a dimple if you weren’t born with one”, but this is false.

Dr. Yagoda offers dimple creation for those who want dimples. Getting dimples is easy and fast and the results are cuter than ever.

Question: Can rhinoplasty or a nose job surgery remove a bump on my nose without drastically changing my appearance? I’m 28 and I don’t want people to notice.
